Review: How to Date Dead Guys

How to Date Dead Guys How to Date Dead Guys by Ann M. Noser
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Synopsis:

College sophomore Emma Roberts remembers her mother’s sage advice: “don’t sleep around, don’t burp in public, and don’t tell anyone you see ghosts”. But when charming Mike Carlson drowns in the campus river under her watch, Emma’s sheltered life shatters.

Blamed for Mike’s death and haunted by nightmares, Emma turns to witchcraft and a mysterious Book of Shadows to bring him back. Under a Blood Moon, she lights candles, draws a pentacle on the campus bridge, and casts a spell. The invoked river rages up against her, but she escapes its fury. As she stumbles back to the dorm, a stranger drags himself from the water and follows her home. And he isn't the only one.

Instead of raising Mike, Emma assists the others she stole back from the dead—a pre-med student who jumped off the bridge, a desperate victim determined to solve his own murder, and a frat boy Emma can’t stand… at first.

More comfortable with the dead than the living, Emma delves deeper into the seductive Book of Shadows. Her powers grow, but witchcraft may not be enough to protect her against the vengeful river and the killers that feed it their victims.

Inspired by the controversial Smiley Face Murders, HOW TO DATE DEAD GUYS will ignite the secret powers hidden deep within each of us.

My Thoughts:

I really loved this book. I expected the story to be fun and quirky but it had a bit of romance in it as well. I love that Emma is such a caring person. She goes above and beyond to help the people she cares about. I am definitely looking forward to book 2.

Blurb:
Nerd. Weird. Ugly. That's me. And I don't want it to be anymore.

Now is my time to make my mark on the world. My college roommate doesn't make it easy. Neither does her brother, Jesse, but for completely different reasons. He makes me feel things I've never felt before.

Wanted. Important. Beautiful.

But we can't be together because it isn't real. Someone like him could never fall for someone like me. We aren't meant to fit together.

Even if I fall apart without him.

Review: Wicked: Witch

Wicked: Witch Wicked: Witch by Nancy Holder
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Synopsis:

Holly Cathers's world shatters when her parents are killed in a rafting accident. She is wrenched from her home in San Francisco and sent to Seattle to live with her aunt, Marie-Claire, and her twin cousins, Amanda and Nicole. But sorrow and grief soon give way to bewildered fascination as one by one, strange incidents begin to occur. Such as the fact that any desire Holly whispers to her cat seems to come true. Or the fact that a beloved friend is injured after a freak attack from a vicious falcon. Or the fact of an undeniably magnetic and familiar attraction to a boy Holly barely knows. Holly, Amanda, and Nicole are about to be launched into a dark legacy of secrets, alliances, and machinations, where ancient magics yield dangerous results, where possession is commonplace, and where reincarnation is taken for granted ? and the three girls must take on roles in an intergenerational feud the like of which they could never have imagined?

My Thoughts:

This book really had the potential to be good. The problem is the jumping around. If it just jumped between time from Holly to Isabeau that would be fine. However, this jumps between several characters. Some in the present and some in the past. This makes it terribly hard to follow the story. Plus there is no easy transition from one person/time to the other most of the time. This book really fell short for me. I am really disappointed because it sounded so interesting.

Review: Absinthe

Absinthe Absinthe by Robin H. Soprano
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Synopsis:

Author Sharie Donovan discovers long-hidden voodoo artifacts during renovations in her recently purchased 1800s manor near New Orleans. Enchanted by the manor’s historic charm and the lure of the mysterious discovery, little did Sharie know her life was about to irrevocably change…

Among the strange and haunting artifacts is a unique bottle containing an unfamiliar green liquid…

One night and one sip later, a 200-year-old spirit, Prudence Ravensdale, communicates with Sharie through her writing. Soon, Sharie realizes with every sip of the odd liquor she is further possessed by Prudence’s presence and captivated by her riveting story.

Thrown into the unfamiliar world of the paranormal, Sharie discovers love, adventure, and a new-found spirituality.

It all begins with a taste of the mysterious elixir
…ABSINTHE.

My Thoughts:

I enjoyed this story. I did find it a tiny bit predictable but enjoyable nonetheless. I loved the New Orleans setting. It really added to the ghost story. The romance was an added bonus. Overall, this is a good story and I enjoyed reading it.

Review: Casanova Killer

Casanova Killer Casanova Killer by Tallulah Grace
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Synopsis:

Catching the eye of a delusional serial killer known as the Casanova Killer signals the end for certain beautiful young women of San Francisco. True to his name, Casanova offers the women a taste of romance and unparalleled adoration before sending them to a bloody death.

The FBI Special Serial Crimes Division, SSCD, sets a trap for the killer with one of their own as bait. Agent Jerry Forbes pairs with Interpol’s Ethan Barnes to capture Casanova before another woman falls prey to his charms.

Jerry and Ethan soon discover that pretending to be lovers may be more dangerous than catching a killer. Follow their story from the moment they set up house to the abrupt end that Jerry does not see coming.

Is it love or certain death?

My Thoughts:

This review is hard to write. I really enjoyed the story. It did take me longer to read it than it should have but I had a headache so it wasn't the story that was at fault. I liked the characters and I really wasn't ready for the book to be over. I felt bad for Jerry and I hope things work out better for her in book 2. Overall, a really good story and I am looking forward to the next one.
