Review: The Black Towers

The Black Towers The Black Towers by Isabella Fontaine
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

One of the things I enjoy the most about this series is that the book is written in different perspectives. Usually it is just Alice and Briar taking turns telling the story from their point of view but this book includes Chase telling his side. They are all grieving over Seth but is Seth really dead. I am interested to know if they really can save Seth. If they can, how does that affect everyone else that thinks he is dead. I will definitely be reading on.

Review: Malevolence

Malevolence Malevolence by Isabella Fontaine
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

In this book, I am finally learning how the corrupted came into our world and who was behind it. Alice has to face this threat. Will defeating this threat eliminate the corrupted? This series really pulls you in. The only way to really describe this book series is to say it is like Buffy the vampire slayer meets the Grimm brothers fairy tales. The ending of this book is sad and sets the tone for the next book. Looking forward to the consequences that result from what happened in this book.

I loved reading about Alice's adventures with Rapunzel and the 12 dancing princesses. I really like Briar although I felt he took a bit of a backseat in this book. I hope to see him more in the rest of the books.

I really enjoyed this little peak at the life of a person who once chased down the corrupted. I only wish it was longer. Alice has so many adventures so I am sure Abigail did as well. I would like to read more about those adventures.

Miss Match Miss Match by Lindzee Armstrong

I really enjoyed this sweet little romance. I have to agree with some of the other reviewers (on Goodreads) and say that Brooke is a bit clueless. Still, I enjoyed the story and would recommend it to romance lovers out there.

Review: The Scorch Trials

The Scorch Trials The Scorch Trials by James Dashner
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This series really just messes with your head. It draws you in and keeps you hanging in there waiting for the next disaster to strike. The things that are done to these kids is extreme but you just can't stop reading. I honestly can't pinpoint what it is that I like about this book. It is twisted and full of surprises and cliffhangers. What else can they possibly put these kids through? I will definitely be reading on to find out what happens next.

Watcher's Web Watcher's Web by Patty Jansen
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I had a little bit of trouble getting interested in the story line. It did improve and I did enjoy it more later in the book. I found the book a bit confusing at times but intriguing at the same time. It is definitely not my highest rated book but I did enjoy it. Will I read book 2? Probably. The story has the potential for a good series.

Orison Orison by Brandon Gray
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This is the first book I have read with dryads in it. It started off slow and I had to force myself to get through that part. However, the book did pick up and I enjoyed it. I did finally connect a bit with the characters towards the end and I started to root for the MCs.

Review: Sword of Deaths

Sword of Deaths Sword of Deaths by Christopher Mannino
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I really enjoyed this sequel to School of Deaths. In book one they talked a lot about the dragons but there really wasn't much action that involved them. This book brought in the dragons so much more. I am hoping that book 3 will have all 3 races equally. I love how Susan and Frank fight for what they believe in. I would also love to see some more female Deaths. Now that Susan has become accepted they really need to allow more girls in. I can't wait to see what happens next.

The Midnight Society The Midnight Society by Rhonda Sermon
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I loved this book. It is a unique spin on time traveling. This book pulled me into the story and didn't let go. I was intrigued by the two warring sets of time travelers because you could almost see both points of view. The ending was totally unexpected and I can't wait to read book 2 because I am dying to find out what happens next.

Review: Fire

Fire Fire by L.B. Gilbert
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was an interesting story. It was the first book I have read with the Elementals in it. I loved how the book focused on the fire elemental but brought in her "sisters" as well. The air elemental (Logan) was brought into the story more than the other ones. I would have liked it if Gia and Serin had played a bigger part in the story. I hope we get to learn more about the other 3 elementals in the rest of the series.
The romance part was understated but was perfect for the story. If Alec had been portrayed any different he might ended as a pile of ashes- LOL. I would love to read more of their adventures together. I would definitely recommend this book.

I really enjoyed this book. There are not that many hellhound books that are more than 50 pages so I was happy to find this one. I love how many different types of creatures there are in this book. This book was definitely unique from a paranormal standpoint. I love how vampires, werewolves, hellhounds and fae train together in this book. I have some questions lingering still but I am hoping book 2 will answer some of them. I definitely would recommend this book and I can't wait to read more of the series.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the prequel to the Sky Ghosts series. I read books 1 & 1.5 first since they were out first. I really love this series. Pain is my favorite type of heroine. She is a strong female with an awesome personality. She is snarky and I find myself laughing at the things she says and does. I love how the book opens up. It took me a second to realize who she was talking to and then I couldn't help but laugh. It was so typical of this character but still so totally unexpected. I really wish the story was longer but I loved it! I can't wait to see what the author comes up with next.

Review: Bewitching

Bewitching Bewitching by Alex Flinn
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I absolutely loved this book. It was nothing like I expected. I love how this one witch was part of so many of the fairy tales that we all know and love. Of course, these tales are nothing like we all remember. Prepare to relearn the stories of The Little Mermaid, Hansel & Gretel and The Princess and the Pea. This story was well written, flipping back and forth from the witch's past and what is currently happening. Maybe helping people is not her forte but it makes for an interesting read. You won't be disappointed with this book.

United We Spy United We Spy by Ally Carter
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

In this book, we find Cammie and her friends in their senior year. They are facing their futures which isn't a whole lot different than their present lives. As always, danger lurks at every turn and who is a spy to trust? I loved learning about a younger Gallagher girl that hasn't really been part of the series so far. I also liked how Cammie didn't just run off on her own this time. They worked as a team, which is awesome as they all have different skills. I am sad that there are not many books left in the series. I would love to see the author write about a new generation of Gallagher Girls.

Review: The Devil's Analyst

The Devil's Analyst The Devil's Analyst by Dennis Frahmann
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

This book had so much potential. The plot was one that I thought I would enjoy. The pacing of the book was way too slow, though. I almost stopped reading it several times. By the time I finally started to have a real interest in the book, it was well over half way through it. As for the characters, Josh was definitely crazy and I just didn't get the point of his tests. I get that he was testing for weakness but what did it really matter if the person you care about is weak. Danny was stronger than I expected him to be but the anger he should have felt just didn't feel like it was there. He was betrayed by the man he loved but he just took it in stride like it didn't mean anything to him.

Now on to what I did like. I enjoyed the little Y2K prank at the beginning because that year many people were worked up about technology and what would happen when the new year rang in. I also liked the little 'therapy sessions' thrown in throughout the book. It was a sneak peak into the mind of a psycho and did really add to the book. The hidden room was a nice touch also. Every crazy person needs a secret hideout to help keep his secrets.

Like I said, the book did improve toward the end so I didn't totally dislike it. It is an ok book if you can make it past the slow background section that takes up so much of the book.

Daniel JosĂ© Older, New York Times bestselling author of Shadowshaper

“Labyrinth Lost is more like reading Paradise FoundZoraida CĂ³rdova brings us a new generation of witches, enchanting and complex. And every page is filled with magic.”
Danielle Page, New York Times bestselling author of Dorothy Must Die

CĂ³rdova’s world will leave you breathless, and her magic will ignite an envy so green you’ll wish you were born a bruja.Delightfully dark and enchanting. An un-putdownable book.”
-Dhonielle Clayton, author of The Belles and Shiny Broken Pieces

“CĂ³rdova’s rich exploration of Latin American culture, her healthy portrayal of bisexuality and her unique voice allow this novel to stand out among its many peers.”
–RT Book Reviews

“Cordova draws inspiration from Ecuadorian, Spanish, African, Mexican, and Caribbean folklore and mythology to craft a page-turning tale about a young bruja unsure of her place in the world.”
“CĂ³rdova pulls elements from Greek mythology and Spanish and Latin American legends to craft a memorable world in Los Lagos, a supernatural realm that is as fascinating as it is threatening. The history and customs of Alex’s family’s type of witchery are also carefully constructed, giving readers a complete world to sink into with satisfaction and wonder.”
-Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books

“This succeeds with its lush use of Latin American mythologies, an unexpected love story, and, above all, in Alex’s complicated relationship with her family. Alex is a necessary heroine, and this dark fantasy nicely”

Follow our voices, sister.
Tell us the secret of your death.
—-Resurrection Canto,
Book of Cantos
T
he second time I saw my dead aunt Rosaria, she was dancing.
Earlier that day, my mom had warned me, pressing a long, red fingernail on the tip of my nose, “Alejandra, don’t go downstairs when the Circle arrives.”
But I was seven and asked too many questions. Every Sunday, cars piled up in our driveway, down the street, and around the corner of our old, narrow house in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Mom’s Circle usually brought cellophane--wrapped dishes and jars of dirt and tubs of brackish water that made the Hudson River look clean. This time, they carried something more.
When my sisters started snoring, I threw off my covers and crept down the stairs. The floorboards were uneven and creaky, but I was good at not being seen. Fuzzy, yellow streetlight shone through our attic window and followed me down every flight until I reached the basement.
A soft hum made its way through the thin walls. I remember thinking I should listen to my mom’s warning and go back upstairs. But our house had been restless all week, and Lula, Rose, and I were shoved into the attic, out of the way while the grown--ups prepared the funeral. I wanted out. I wanted to see.
The night was moonless and cold one week after the Witch’s New Year, when Aunt Rosaria died of a sickness that made her skin yellow like hundred--year--old paper and her nails turn black as coal. We tried to make her beautiful again. My sisters and I spent all day weaving good luck charms from peonies, corn husks, and string—-one loop over, under, two loops over, under. Not even the morticians, the Magos de Muerte, could fix her once--lovely face.
Aunt Rosaria was dead. I was there when we mourned her. I was there when we buried her. Then, I watched my father and two others shoulder a dirty cloth bundle into the house, and I knew I couldn’t stay in bed, no matter what my mother said.
So I opened the basement door.
Red light bathed the steep stairs. I leaned my head toward the light, toward the beating sound of drums and sharp plucks of fat, nylon guitar strings.
A soft mew followed by whiskers against my arm made my heart jump to the back of my rib cage. I bit my tongue to stop the scream. It was just my cat, Miluna. She stared at me with her white, glowing eyes and hissed a warning, as if telling me to turn back. But Aunt Rosaria was my godmother, my family, my friend. And I wanted to see her again.
“Sh!” I brushed the cat’s head back.
Miluna nudged my leg, then ran away as the singing started.
I took my first step down, into the warm, red light. Raspy voices called out to our gods, the Deos, asking for blessings beyond the veil of our worlds. Their melody pulled me step by step until I was crouched at the bottom of the landing.
They were dancing.
Brujas and brujos were dressed in mourning white, their faces painted in the aspects of the dead, white clay and black coal to trace the bones. They danced in two circles—-the outer ring going clockwise, the inner counterclockwise—hands clasped tight, voices vibrating to the pulsing drums.
And in the middle was Aunt Rosaria.
Her body jerked upward. Her black hair pooled in the air like she was suspended in water. There was still dirt on her skin. The white skirt we buried her in billowed around her slender legs. Black smoke slithered out of her open mouth. It weaved in and out of the circle—-one loop over, under, two loops over, under. It tugged Aunt Rosaria higher and higher, matching the rhythm of the canto.
Then, the black smoke perked up and changed its target. It could smell me. I tried to backpedal, but the tiles were slick, and I slid toward the circle. My head smacked the tiles. Pain splintered my skull, and a broken scream lodged in my throat.
The music stopped. Heavy, tired breaths filled the silence of the pulsing red dark. The enchantment was broken. Aunt Rosaria’s reanimated corpse turned to me. Her body purged black smoke, lowering her back to the ground. Her ankles cracked where the bone was brittle, but still she took a step. Her dead eyes gaped at me. Her wrinkled mouth growled my name:Alejandra.
She took another step. Her ankle turned and broke at the joint, sending her flying forward. She landed on top of me. The rot of her skin filled my nose, and grave dirt fell into my eyes.
Tongues clucked against crooked teeth. The voices of the circle hissed, “What’s the girl doing out of bed?”
There was the scent of extinguished candles and melting wax. Decay and perfume oil smothered me until they pulled the body away.
My mother jerked me up by the ear, pulling me up two flights of stairs until I was back in my bed, the scream stuck in my throat like a stone.
Never,” she said. “You hear me, Alejandra? Never break a Circle.”
I lay still. So still that after a while, she brushed my hair, thinking I had fallen asleep.
I wasn’t. How could I ever sleep again? Blood and rot and smoke and whispers filled my head.
“One day you’ll learn,” she whispered.
Then she went back down the street--lit stairs, down into the warm red light and to Aunt Rosaria’s body. My mother clapped her hands, drums beat, strings plucked, and she said, “Again.”

This book had me laughing here and there throughout the book. I really enjoyed the story line. I loved how Mara and Gus were with each other. The frog kind of cracked me up. He had a mission - LOL! Paul wasn't a big enough character in the book. I feel he should have been more a part of the story before being possessed. I really wanted to see Paul and Mara have more of a relationship. I am hoping that Mara is able to help Paul get past being possessed and maybe they can have a relationship in book 2. Gonna miss the frog though......

When In Rome...Find Yourself When In Rome...Find Yourself by Lena Mae Hill
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Normally I don't care for books with weak heroines but in this book it works. Rory is insecure and over anxious but she presses forward despite her fears. She is alone with no friends or family so she has to learn to make her own way. I love how she grows more independent throughout the story. I just wish the story was longer. The author could have spread the story out much longer with the internship.

Chasing Ava: A Bachelor of Shell Cove Novel Chasing Ava: A Bachelor of Shell Cove Novel by Siera London
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This book is an enjoyable contemporary romance. Ava definitely had her issues and hangups. Then again, Logan did as well. There were times that I thought Logan needed smacked because he was so controlling. I also had moments that Ava annoyed me because she didn't stand up for herself and let people control her. I did enjoy how both characters grew personally throughout the book. I was glad that both of them changed for the better. This book was definitely worth the read despite my initial thoughts on the characters.

Wow, the Reverians make the Lucidites (from the Lucidites series) seem like angels in comparison. The Lucidites had a lot of secrets but they seemed to really want what is best for their people. The Reverians just want to control the world, it seems. I was pulled into the Reverian world and I couldn't put the book down. Ms. Noffke is very good at pulling her readers in. I haven't read a book of hers yet that disappointed me. I can't wait to read book 2.
