Review: Soul Fire

Soul Fire Soul Fire by D.N. Erikson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Synopsis:

I never wanted to be an FBI consultant.
Too bad I didn't get a say.

It's my first day on the job, and a phoenix's guardian just ate it on the island's remote steppes, dozens of miles from the city. Well, murdered, by a rare, powerful, and scary form of god-killing magic, to be exact. And the phoenix just left with the body.

Not a problem, you say? I beg to differ. Turns out, the phoenix transports all the island's dead bodies and souls to the afterlife. And when the phoenix leaves, the bodies don't just start piling up. They start coming back from the dead. And let's just say dead people don't come back good as new.

Which means that, if I don't solve this thing quick, a certain rain goddess might turn the entire island to ash before the reborn army becomes too big to contain...

My Thoughts:

I wasn't sure how this book would go. The first book in the series started off slow and then got better towards the middle. Usually when that happens, book 2 can go either way... either really good or fall very short. This one stepped it up a notch. I was actually drawn into the story right away. I didn't have to push thru any slow spots this time. I love the MC. She is sassy and rebellious. Then again, she really has nothing to lose as she has a soul-binding contract. I love that even when Eden is faced with a problem that will end badly no matter what she does, she finds a workable solution. Of course, pitting a vampire against a goddess could be hazardous to your health. I can't wait to see what mess she gets into next!

Review: Mushrooms

Mushrooms Mushrooms by Cameron Jace
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Synopsis:

Alice and the Pillar's 8th installment in the series...

The Wonderland War has begun. The Inklings are chased by almost every country in the world. The Pillar's fate is unknown. Lewis and Fabiola are trying to help, and the whereabouts of the Six Keys is so close. Even closer than they think...

But the real question is about Alice. Is she ready for the answers she's been looking for? Is she ready to face her insanity?

My Thoughts:

This is the first book in this series that I haven't given a 5 star. I honestly love the series and how many twists and turns there are. My only issue with this book is the huge amount of grammatical errors. Not just one or two but so many sprinkled all through the book. I had to re-read paragraphs several times because the wrong form of words or similar sounding words that have a totally different meaning were used. The past seven books did not have this issue. Grammatical issues aside, I loved the story. A lot of revelations were made. I loved the reveal of "the most precious thing". I have to agree with that being the most precious thing in the world. I almost laughed out loud when they found the keys. Talk about hiding things right in the open LOL! I was shocked about Carter Pillar. It is kind of obvious now that I have read all of the books so far. With so many reveals in this book, I can't help but wonder what is left for the final book in the series. I am both excited and sad for the final book to come out. It has been a wild and crazy ride so far. I will miss the madness of it all.

Review: Spellfall

Spellfall Spellfall by Katherine Roberts
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Synopsis:

When Natalie finds a strange candy wrapper floating in a parking-lot puddle, an ominous yellow-eyed man informs her it's a spell -- and a bewitching tale of kidnapping and sorcery unfolds. This mysterious encounter leads Natalie to an enchanted world called Earthaven, where spells hang from giant soul trees and magical Spell Lords can cast them. Natalie is astonished to discover that she belongs to this world -- and that now she has to save it. The sinister Lord Hawk, exiled to the human world, is planning his revenge against the Spell Lords. Only Natalie suspects he's developed a poison to kill the soul trees -- and only Natalie can stop him.

With the help of a loyal magehound, a herd of unicorns, and the spirit of her dead mother, Natalie must do battle with an evil force determined to spread its power across both worlds.

My Thoughts:

This book is definitely different from the other books about magic that I have read. I love that the author didn't stick with the norm. She created a whole new way of performing magic. I really like how many different types of familiars a Caster or Spell Lord/Lady can have. This was definitely an interesting start to the series and gave the reader some insight into the world that the characters live in. I am curious enough to want to see where the author takes the series. There is so much potential with this world she created.

Review: Magic or Madness

Magic or Madness Magic or Madness by Justine Larbalestier
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Synopsis:

For fifteen years, Reason Cansino has lived a life on the run. Together with her mother, Sarafina, she has moved from one place to another in the Australian countryside, desperate not to be found by Reason's grandmother Esmeralda, a dangerous woman who believes in magic. But when Sarafina suffers a breakdown, Reason is forced to move in with her grandmother in Sydney. The moment Reason walks through Esmeralda's back door and finds herself on a New York City street, she's confronted by an unavoidable truth-magic is real.
This thrilling novel will bring readers through revelation upon revelation, leading to Reason's ultimate discovery of the price she must pay if she uses her magic.

My Thoughts:

Although, I found the story idea interesting, I wasn't a huge fan of the characters. Reason believed everything her mother told her even after seeing the truth. Her mother's description of how Esmeralda lived was obviously distorted. Instead of talking to her grandmother (Esmeralda) and deciding for herself, she decided to stubbornly continue to believe her mother. Most of the book she believes what everyone tells her and never decides anything for herself. Even when she is deciding which grandparent is worth helping she looks to Tom for an answer. I really prefer stronger heroines and she just isn't it. The book did have potential but fell short of it.

*Book Blitz* The Devil to Pay by Jackie May (Shayne Davies, #1)

The Devil to Pay
by Jackie May
(Shayne Davies, #1)
Publication date: September 18th 2018
Genres: Adult, Urban Fantasy

Synopsis:
When it comes to talented new recruits at the Federal Underworld Agency, Nora Jacobs is only half the story…

The Devil to Pay is the first book in Jackie May’s companion series to Nora Jacobs, set in the same urban fantasy Detroit, sharing several supporting characters (hello, Nick Gorgeous), but with a new main character, Shayne Davies. This series can be enjoyed on its own, but readers of the Nora Jacobs books will be more familiar with the world and its characters.

As a fox shifter, Shayne Davies gets no respect in an underworld run by the fearsome and powerful—werewolves and vampires, sorcerers, demons, and mythical faerie creatures. Even at home, Shayne is still treated like the brat of the pack. Her mom constantly nags; her intended (but unwanted) mate ensures plenty of awkward silences, and Shayne is even expected to act submissive to the pack’s future alpha…a six year old.

Yeah. Time for Plan B.

All Shayne wants is to prove that she’s got what it takes to run with the big dogs, which is why she is constantly hounding Nick Gorgeous to make her an agent at the “Double D”, the Detroit Division of the FUA. That’s an easy “No” for Gorgeous, who keeps a strict “No Shayne Davies” policy. Well, never say never. When mysterious underworld criminals steal a load of bomb materials, the FUA picks up a messy case nobody wants to touch. It’s bad enough that a demon horde is involved, but now the annoying FBI has sent out an agent to babysit the investigation. To make matters worse, the notoriously uncooperative master vampire Henry Stadther has control over what may be the only key to breaking the case: a handsome human detective.

The whole thing’s a hopeless disaster.

So guess what, Shayne? You’re hired!

*Book Blitz* Through the Layers by R.H. Tucker

Through the Layers
by R.H. Tucker
(Rumor Has It, #4)
Publication date: September 17th 2018
Genres: New Adult, Romance

Synopsis:
Second chances are for suckers.

Micah’s heard that expression before. With his first year of college in the books, catching his girlfriend cheating on him—again—he learns that lesson firsthand. The girl he thought could’ve been his high school sweetheart, turns out to be nothing more than a liar, completely destroying his trust.

No one has ever called Veronica fat. Thick? Okay. Curvy? Sure. However, they’ve never come right out and told her she’s overweight. Not unless you count the kids in third grade who called her roly-poly. Grade school or freshman year of college, it doesn’t matter. Guys usually go for the tall, thin girls. Girls like Micah’s ex.

Despite their hang-ups, and their pasts, Micah and Veronica find something in each other that quells their concerns. But when old faces return, and unsettling truths are revealed, will either of them be able to work through the layers and find one another again?

Through the Layers is a standalone YA/NA romance in the Rumor Has It series.

Excerpt:

I knock again and pull out my phone. Maybe I should call him.
The door swings open and Micah stands there, dripping wet, holding a towel around his waist. “Hey, you’re early.”
“I … I …” I’m trying to form words, but my brain has gone to pudding. I can feel it, all squishy, sloshing around inside of my skull. He opens the door wider to let me in, but I just stand there, admiring—gawking—at the water dripping down his chest. The beads of water trail over his muscles, down his stomach, to somewhere underneath the towel.
“You gonna stay out there all night?”
My eyes shoot back up, and he’s smiling. “Would you like to come inside or did you want to get to business out there?” My mouth drops, and he laughs.
Finally realizing he’s teasing me, I find some kind of strength to not stare at him, and go inside.
“Just give me a second to dry off.”
I stop and stand behind the sofa. Usually, I’d feel comfortable enough to go to the kitchen and grab something to drink, or just lounge around on their couch, or even head straight into his bedroom and turn on the TV and start to watch something. Now, I’m stuck.
What should I do? Does he expect me to do something or say something? Should we have something to drink first? I know they usually have some alcohol in the apartment, maybe he wants to relax first. Should I change already? Why is it they make it look so much easier in the movies and on TV when it comes to this sort of stuff?
“What are you doing?” Micah asks, coming back out of the bathroom. He’s got on a pair of shorts and a shirt that fits him snuggly, but I can’t erase—nor do I want to—the mental image of him opening the door in nothing but a towel.
“Um …” I look around, unsure how to answer.
He gives me a hug and kisses the top of my head, before walking to the kitchen. “Happy birthday. I ordered a pizza. I would’ve gone all out, but you said you just wanted a chill night. Is that okay?”
“Mm-hm.” I nod.
Turning around, he stares at me still standing there. “Are you okay?”
Get it together, V. This was your idea!
