I blinked at the merrow, unsure of what to say. Of course I wanted to be with Randy, and I knew Pauline needed me with her on land but… my kingdom needed me, too. With Angelique in Finfolkaheem and Margaret gone, I was the only royal Atargatis had left that was fit to rule. Mother would never be accepted back on the throne, regardless of any progress she may have made. That wound would never fully heal.
He read into my silence, and offered a silent, understanding nod. “Tough choice. Make yourself happy and let everyone else down, or abandon the love of your life and live in servitude under the ocean’s order.”
Opening my mouth, I prepared to agree with him when Margaret burst into the cave, leaving a trail of wild bubbles behind. “We have a problem,” she announced, far louder than I would’ve preferred.
As I shushed her, Regis winced, bringing a chewed up, half-dead-looking finger to his lips.
“Sorry,” she whispered, almost inaudible this time. “There’s been an attack. Finfolkaheem has gone under siege.”
Without command, my body jolted upward as I screamed, “What?” The tender exposed flesh on my back scraped up against the jagged cave wall, the sting just barely enough to keep me from teetering into hysteria. Distraction was a powerful ally, but even still, the gravity of her words threatened to throw me into a full blown panic.
The image of the two merrows below me came in and out of focus as I forced myself to breathe. My mind scrambled to calm the ferocious beating of my heart. I left them. Pauline, Randy, Jewel… the only reason any of them were in Finfolkaheem in the first place was because they followed me. It was me who led Mami Watta to Angelique’s kingdom, and deep down I knew she would return for me.
And I still left them.
