Excerpt:
Only a few hours after the meeting, everyone is asleep, except the young Gideon who is bizarrely sitting outside under the night sky. Placing himself on a small stone step just in front of the house he looks up at the stars above, kept company by a single street lamp.
Gideon: (Wow, this is all turning into quite a journey. My father is a man who apparently saved this country. I never knew he achieved so much since he left, and yet… I can’t help but hate him. I know it may sound selfish but I would rather he stayed with mother and I, instead of leaving – three years ago. If he never had left, mother wouldn’t have gotten so sick. She would still be alive.) He brushes a slight tear from his right eye while still gazing at the night.
Gideon: (I wonder if he can see the sky where he is now? If what Jill says is true, can we really be sure he is safe? After all, Tetsue is an island where Kibishi and Ukyo came from. There are bound to be other warriors, countless in number whom father would have to go up against. Why do all of this and for what purpose? Oh that’s right, “to change the future” eh? If my father really does have the power to see the future, what did he see? At that moment, Gideon hears faint footsteps from afar – coming closer. Within seconds the crimson scarf samurai steps into the open. They remain silent waiting for the other to say the first word.
Kibishi: You’re up late, why are you standing here all by yourself? It isn’t safe.
Gideon: Sorry. I just needed to clear my head for a while before we get going. Kibishi shows a look of surprise, flinching in response.
Kibishi: Oh, so you still would like to continue your journey – after all that you witnessed and discovered today?
Gideon: Yes, more than ever! I am still determined to find my father using your help, even if it kills me.
Kibishi: Gideon, but what if you get hurt or worse? I cannot guarantee that I can protect you, especially knowing that the entire Tetsue army would like to see you killed. Heck, what if I lose control again, and end up killing you?
Gideon: I know that and it’s my choice to make, so I don’t want you to feel guilty if something does happen to me. Even if I don’t survive before meeting my father, I would die with relief knowing that I spent these short but eventful days outside the walls of my home city. You see, in Shen I never had a life. Everything was a constant continuum, nothing to ever look forward to. However, on the outside world, things are different. I want to live on the whim of destiny, the same way you do Kibishi; coming close to life and death.
After a slight pause Kibishi bursts into laughter.
Kibishi: Oh jeez, you’re so melodramatic! Your old man was just the same, spouting nonsense like: life, death and destiny. It’s not a privilege to live inside the web of destiny – moron. Why do people speak so highly of fate and such matters? There is nothing pretty about having your actions mapped out and determined by some mumbo jumbo.

I once spent an entire year writing a novel, only to delete it midway through. I know, I am a horrible person. However, some sacrifices are necessary, when striving for a story that a writer can be proud of.
