Publication Date: June 15, 2018

Jason and Mortyiene investigate the deaths of several priestesses

A priestess is dead hanging in an iron maiden.

The conclave of priestesses are meeting with new instructions from the goddess Levet.

A new floor is opening and the sealed rooms are scenes of horrific crimes discovered after the
room opens. Jason and Mortyiene are called to investigate. Who is killing these women? Why?
Does this have anything to do with the ongoing war?

To complicate things further, the sky rangers led by general Valairia, war mistress of the Kylvar
are in town to fight a rampaging dragon. There is well known animosity between the clergy and
Valairia. These spats erupt into battles as the general assumes privileges not granted to her.

Don’t miss another exciting book in The Jason and Mortyiene Mysteries.

Excerpt:

Perequin twitched and rose. The wounds on her body faded as Mortyiene's magic took hold. Perequin grabbed Mortyiene’s hand, sucking her thumb.
Mortyiene allowed her the blood, and then pulled her hand away. The priestess sat up, the privacy blanket pooling in her lap. Her breasts were soft, and it was obvious she had been a mother. Stretch marks creased her abdomen. She had the most amazing blue eyes, like the clear sky of a summer’s day.
"You are becoming stronger," Jason noted, watching the wounds seal.
“What happened to me?” Perequin’s voice was rough and husky, as if it had lost the capacity for sweet sounds.
“We found your body in a newly formed chamber of the Library.” Mortyiene stroked the woman’s hair as she talked to her, ignoring the blood that caked her hair in knots. “Can you tell us how you came to be there?”
“Not really.” Perequin’s brow creased as she tried to remember. “I was cataloging insect carapaces. I remember the sound of boots, then a cloth over my mouth the smell of chloroform. Next thing I remember was in an iron maiden, with the pain of a fresh wound in my side. Someone had buried a key under my skin! A voice… I remember a voice telling me something. But then, I failed… failed the test. And then the pain. I remember pain and death.” Her eyes clouded as she remembered her own passing.
"You were found in a new room of the Library." Mortyiene stroked the woman's hair, ignoring the drying blood. "Can you tell us what happened?"
“I was attending my duties when I felt a cloth on my nose and mouth. I passed out. The next thing I remember is waking up chained to an iron maiden. I had to cut a key out from my side to unlock the collar about my neck.”
Mortyiene stroked her arm. “Do you have any idea who did this to you?”
Perequin trembled. “No idea. I don’t know who did this. The only thing I remember is whoever did it was soft.”
“What do you mean soft?” Jason asked.
“The hands had no hard calluses. They were soft like a man who didn’t need to do heavy labor.”
“That does not make sense,” Jason said. “The device you were locked into was made of metal. Surely that would have formed calluses.”
Perequin stared ahead.
“Have you had any arguments recently? Would someone hold a grudge against you?” Mortyiene asked.
“I have no enemies. I am a sanctuary priestess. I maintain the sanctuary rooms. I was here for the conclave.”
“I think that is all we are going to get from her,” Mortyiene murmured.
“Release her so Marele can do the autopsy.”
Mortyiene placed her hand on Perequin’s forehead. “Sleep, dear one. Go to your earned reward with your goddess.”
Perequin closed her eyes and lay back on the table. Jason covered her with the sheet.
“She has a kid?” Mortyiene asked.
“Priestesses do not normally keep their children. I wonder where he is.” Jason made a note in his book.
“The only clue we got was her assailant has soft hands.”
“But only women’s scents were noted, and not many women are strong enough to carry a body.”
“I know of someone who might be,” Mortyiene whispered.
“Before we accuse a Kylvar, we must be sure. I fear that forensic evidence will be necessary.”
