Review: Reaper's Run

Reaper's Run Reaper's Run by David VanDyke
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Synopsis:

When US Marine Sergeant Jill Repeth's blown-off legs begin to regenerate, she thinks it's a medical miracle. But the breakthrough that heals her war injuries is exactly what the government desperately wants to hide - by any means necessary. Hunted, she must cross an America wracked by strife, to try to find a family who may already be dead.

Reaper's Run is an origins story and apocalyptic novel, the beginning of one warrior's journey from tactical cop to freedom fighter and beyond. It leads the reader into the acclaimed Plague Wars science fiction series.

This book contains a bonus post-apocalyptic novella by prolific author Ryan King.

My Thoughts:

This was an ok book. It did drag a bit for me. I kept finding myself looking for other things to do. I can usually read books this size in a couple hours but this one took me 3 days. Overall, it was an ok book but I doubt I will read further.

Review: Wide Awake

Wide Awake Wide Awake by Daniele Lanzarotta
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Synopsis:

Kayla is a 16-year-old girl who was adopted when she was little. She lives a normal life, with great friends, loving adoptive parents, and well... a not-so-great boyfriend. But the reason why she was given up for adoption was far from any usual reason. She was meant to be kept away from the Academy and anything else related to the supernatural beings that could hurt her.

Unfortunately for Kayla, it was only a matter of time before she encountered the creatures from the Otherworld, and there is just no running away from the beings that she can now see.

In trying to protect Kayla by keeping her away from the Academy, she may have just been put in even more danger.

My Thoughts:

I absolutely loved this book. I just couldn't put the book down once I started. The story is so unique and interesting that it really held my attention. There are so many questions that I have. I just want to keep reading on to see what happens next. This series will definitely be on my TBR for the near future.

Review: Shadow Reaper

Shadow Reaper Shadow Reaper by Amos Cassidy
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Synopsis:

Only the bravest go over the Horizon...

Twenty years ago the barriers between worlds came down and our reality was swallowed up by the Shadowlands. Now we scavenge to survive, until one day there’s nothing left to reap. Starvation is around the corner, but I’m not the roll over and wait-to-die kinda girl. Nope, I’m going further than anyone has ever been and returned to tell the tale. I’m going into the Beyond, and I’m not coming back without a solution.

Dark urban fantasy with a post-apocalyptic twist.

My Thoughts:

I had some trouble getting into the story. In fact, I kept wanting to put it down for a while. It did pick up and I was able to finally get into the story. Then I started to really enjoy the wonderful worlds that the author created. There are some unique beings and some very unique ways of life. This book left me curious about certain characters and about their shared past. I will definitely be adding book 2 to my TBR.

Will Beth be able to unravel the plot to kill the King before it's too late?

My Thoughts:

There was nothing wrong with this book. It just didn't hold my attention. I kept wanting to put it down and find something else to do. I really was hoping for more from this book. It just wasn't my kind of book.

Review: A Game of Greed and Deception

A Game of Greed and Deception A Game of Greed and Deception by John Mathews
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Synopsis:

She is young and beautiful, and recently married to a very wealthy middle-aged man who considers her to be the ultimate woman for him and holds her out as a model for his beloved 10-year-old daughter. They travel to a mountain hideaway to celebrate their first year together as a family when things begin to unravel. Her husband goes missing after a treacherous car accident, and the wife and daughter seem trapped and isolated, and stalked from both inside and outside the cabin.

What ensues is the story of a woman driven by her soulless greed and self entitlement, and a man who is wronged and apparently out to get revenge. This deadly game of cat and mouse will keep you on the edge of your seat. The macabre scenes include deadly traps and medieval torture devices, hidden doors, secret rooms, and an underground labyrinth of torture chambers. Add in the legend of a hoard of pure gold bars, and it becomes clear that someone has a much bigger plan in mind and will let nothing get in their way. But who? This is the story of a plot so devious that it is set up to fool the State police investigation. But can it fool you? Keep guessing until the final scene as to what is really going on and let your intuition guide you.

My Thoughts:

This book is riveting and suspenseful. You just can't put it down. Every time something new happens it makes you question what you thought was happening. There are many twists and turns that keep the reader guessing all the way to the end.

Review: Equal Rites

Equal Rites Equal Rites by Terry Pratchett
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Synopsis:

On Discworld, a dying wizard tries to pass on his powers to an eighth son of an eighth son, who is just at that moment being born. The fact that the son is actually a daughter is discovered just a little too late. The town witch insists on turning the baby into a perfectly normal witch, thus mending the magical damage of the wizard's mistake. But now the young girl will be forced to penetrate the inner sanctum of the Unseen University--and attempt to save the world with one well-placed kick in some enchanted shins! Reissue.

My Thoughts:

I started the Discworld series with book 33 and I loved it. This one was good but I almost feel that it was written when the author was still developing his style. Don't get me wrong, I really did enjoy the book. It just took me longer to get interested in the story. I will definitely continue with reading more books (probably not in order since I can't seem to find book 1) because I know the ones I have read later in the series are really good.
