Review: Magic Eclipse

Magic Eclipse Magic Eclipse by Ella Summers
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Synopsis:

They were lovers. Now they’re enemies.

A magic shock wave cuts across the world—fracturing reality, leaving only a dark Shadow World in its place.

Former monster-hunting mercenary mage Sera Dering is fighting for her right to exist. Labeled as an abomination, she’s caught in a supernatural war that has been raging for centuries between her kind and the Magic Council’s Crusaders. But when people from both sides begin to go missing, Sera has to team up with Kai Drachenburg, the Crusaders’ commander. She soon discovers that the mysterious fog rolling across San Francisco is only half as dangerous as the sexy, powerful dragon-shifting mage who brings out memories in her of a forgotten world.

As the commander of the Crusaders’ North American army and a member of one of the world’s oldest magic dynasties, it is Kai’s sworn duty to hate Sera. But as they work together to fight the magic fog plaguing the city, he finds himself drawn to her in ways he cannot understand. Their new alliance is tested, however, when they begin to realize that someone close to them is behind the dark spell—and that the fog is more than it seems.

My Thoughts:

Cover/Title: It is no secret that I love books with magic in them so it was a no-brainer when I saw this book.

Characters: I loved the characters in this book. I loved how snarky and sarcastic that Sera is. Kai is just as interesting and is perfect for Sera. The commandos are fun as well. I loved the fun banter throughout the book from these characters.

Plot: Sera and Kai are engaged and she is trying on wedding dresses. Then everything changes in an instant. From lovers to enemies and none of them have any memories of the life they just lost.

Overall: I loved this book. I loved the peek at their lives before they were all torn apart. Poor Kai and Sera being put on opposites sides of a war when they were lovers previously. I love how they were instinctively drawn to one another despite what this new world wanted them to believe. I can't wait to read book 2 to see what happens next. Will they be able to return to their previous lives or will this new reality be it for them?

Review: Magic Unbound

Magic Unbound Magic Unbound by Jill Nojack
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Synopsis:
Not-quite-sixteen year old Lizbet Moore expects a boring last month of summer vacation -- and she gets what she’s expecting until a fifteen hundred year old Fae named Eamon shows up in her backyard disguised as a down-on-his-luck garden gnome. When Eamon slips an ancient amulet around her neck, the memories of Lizbet’s many past lives come slamming back to her to change her summer plans in a way she could never have expected.

Forced to go on the run when murderous monks show up at the back door, Lizbet hops a plane to Scotland accompanied by Eamon, the whispering voices of her past lives, and geekily cute James, the college boy from next door. Not only does she have to dodge the monks, but she’s racing against time and greedy land developers to prevent the entire race of the Fae from being destroyed.

The only thing Lizbet knows for sure is that if she fails and can't produce a few live fairies at the end of her journey, she is going to be grounded for life...and probably for her next life, too.

My Thoughts:
Cover/Title: It was the title that drew me in this time. I love books with magic. I haven't read a good fae book in a while.

Characters: The characters are ok. I do think that Lizbet went with Eamon a bit too easily. I would think she would be more wary and skeptical, even with the necklace he put on her.

Plot: The Tree of Life is in danger. If the tree is destroyed the fairies will be also. Eamon recruits Lizbet and James to help.

Overall: The story is interesting and fast paced. I loved the Arthurian twist (I will let you read to figure that one out). I enjoyed the story but I don't know if I will continue on with the series or not. If book 2 fits a challenge on Goodreads, I might grab it.

Review: A Dangerous Love

A Dangerous Love A Dangerous Love by Bertrice Small
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Synopsis:

Orphaned by England's War of the Roses and betrayed by her half- sister, Elizabeth of York, Adair Radcliffe is taken captive during a border raid and sold into servitude to Scottish laird Conal Bruce. The laird seeks a housekeeper-but finds that beneath the girl's dirty, disheveled appearance is a spirited violet-eyed beauty who refuses to be tamed. It is she who will teach the stubborn Scot that love recognizes neither borders nor rank...

My Thoughts:

Cover/Title: Honestly, I didn't even look at the cover. I have read enough by this author to know that I would not be disappointed. So I grabbed a copy and I couldn't wait to read it.

Characters: Adair is exactly the type of heroines that I love to read about. No matter what life threw at her, she dealt with it the best way she knew how.

Plot: Adair is sent away from her family at the young age of 6, in an attempt to save her life. She is thrust into court life. Her life is peaceful, until the king decides that she should marry someone that she doesn't know. She rebels and heads for home. Her life is not easy and she has many trials and several husbands. She loses a lot but gains so much later.

Overall: I loved this book. Adair's life is an adventure full of trials and loss. She is strong and is able to overcome these trials. Then she finds a life and love that made it all worth while. Bertrice Small has never disappointed me. She knows how to write a story. People complain about the language she uses but it doesn't bother me. We use language and slang that people in the past didn't use so I am sure there is language and slang that they used in that time period that doesn't jive with ours. Is it authentic to that time period? I don't know, I didn't live then. Does it matter? Not really. The book is enjoyable. A warning for those who don't like descriptive sex scenes. Bertrice Small doesn't hide these things behind the bedroom door. If it bothers you to read these descriptions, then her books are not for you. For those of you that don't mind, definitely read her books.

Review: A Key to Worlds: A Parallel Worlds Novel

A Key to Worlds: A Parallel Worlds Novel A Key to Worlds: A Parallel Worlds Novel by Mara Amberly
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Synopsis:

Pandora is a scientist confined to a barren, post-apocalyptic world. A mystical dream compels her to explore her family's history, as rumours swirl that there might be people living outside their planet's protected settlements. Once, outsiders tried to form free colonies of their own - Pandora's parents among them. They were said to have perished in the world's toxic environment, but Pandora doesn't know for sure. She's compelled to explore the planet for herself, but the laws of Alverron forbid it without the council's say-so.

Nessa's unique gift and her reckless nature have an unfortunate tendency to get her into trouble. When she opens a portal into another realm from the back of her aunt's garden, she doesn't expect to find an archaic world or herself imprisoned. A chain of perilous events and poor decisions force Nessa to test the limits of her gifts. Can she find the strength and ingenuity to set things right and help her new friend James find his way home?

A Key to Worlds: A Parallel Worlds Novel is an intriguing tale of fantasy adventure spanning multiple worlds.

My Thoughts:

Cover/Title: The title was intriguing and after reading the synopsis, I decided to give it a try.

Characters: Pandora kind of bored me most of the story. Towards the end, she became a bit more interesting. Nessa, on the other hand, was interesting. I enjoyed reading her parts of the story more.

Plot: Pandora lives in a post-apocalyptic world and longs to explore the area outside their settlement. Nessa lives in a different dimension and has the ability to travel to other dimensions.

If you plan to read the book, please don't read any further as there are spoilers.

Overall: The problem is that there isn't much to this book.

I can sum up Pandora's story in a couple sentences. She longs to explore outside the settlement. She finally goes outside, finds the box and learns the past. End of Pandora's story.

Nessa's story is a bit more in depth but not by much. She explores other dimensions. She accidentally brings a man home with her. She struggles to learn her powers so she can return him home. They find a couple other worlds first and escape back to her portal. She returns him home but he likes her so he brings his son and ex-wife back to her world. No build up of romance, it just is.

Nessa's story has a bit of a plot but Pandora's story lacks much substance at all. I think the book had potential. Nessa was interesting and if the romance had been weaved into the story more and it was longer, this could have been a good book. Pandora just belonged in a sequel or something, she just didn't fit. Unfortunately, this book fell short for me.

Review: Gold Bars and Tin Stars

Gold Bars and Tin Stars Gold Bars and Tin Stars by Michelle Lashier
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Synopsis:

It's been two years since twins Jill and Joanna Mason time traveled. They haven't told anyone about their experience...yet.

When Jill decides to come clean with her fiancĂ© about her trip to medieval Sherwood Forest, he's understandably skeptical and she wonders if their relationship can last. Meanwhile, Joanna despairs that no matter what time period she's in, she can't find Mr. Right. But more insight and adventure are on the way. When Joanna accidentally books the twins in an Old West live action role play, the sisters are mysteriously transported to Arizona in 1891. Immediately they're caught in the middle of a Wild West adventure with runaway stagecoaches, bandits, shootouts, stolen treasure, dynamite, and murder. While Jill forms a gang of gunfighters to protect an orphanage, Joanna investigates a prominent citizen's death with the help of the town marshal who may not be all he seems.

This lighthearted adventure is the sequel to Quivers and Quills.

My Thoughts:

Cover/Title: I love time travel books! I read book 1 of this series a while back and I couldn't wait to read this one when I saw it. The covers on these books don't really do justice to the stories but the clock is accurate since they do travel in time.

Characters: Jill and Joanna are as different as can be but I love reading their adventures in time. I enjoyed learning about Rob & Liam as well.

Plot: Once again, the twins are sent back in time. This time to Arizona in 1891. The twins throw themselves into this new adventure.

Overall: I absolutely love this series. I really wanted to give it 5 stars and there are no half ratings. My problem was that there are a few editing issues. The most glaring was Chico telling the twins goodbye. It was obviously Chico that was supposed to be talking but Pedro's name was inserted there instead (Pedro is an adult and Chico is 8). There were a couple times I had to re-read a line or two just to make sure I was reading it right. It interrupted the flow of the story for me and I was really enjoying it. I do intend to read more in this series as I am able to get my hands on a copy.

Review: Case of the Strawberry Cream Stabbing

Case of the Strawberry Cream Stabbing Case of the Strawberry Cream Stabbing by Jessica Lansberry
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Synopsis:

After losing her husband, Beatrice thought her days of adventure were over, but then she meets a handsome debonair man who turns out to be a conman and murdered days later. Armed with her two quirky best friends and a sarcastic handsome police detective, Beatrice must solve the murder mystery before the crime gets too close for comfort!

Case of the Strawberry Cream Stabbing is the first of these cozy mysteries new releases.

There are absolutely no sex, gore, curse words or cliffhangers in these murder mystery books. This is an easy read about a retired school teacher and amateur sleuth who lives in a retirement community filled with colorful personalities.

If you like cats and wise-cracking parrots, you'll enjoy these cozy mysteries for kindle. Although this book is part of a cozy mystery series, it can be read as a standalone book.

My Thought:

Cover/Title: I love murder mysteries that have something to do with food. It makes me smile. Of course, that may have something to do with my husband. I love when he asks what I am reading and I give him a title like this. The look on his face is priceless and I can't help but grin sweetly at him. He actually told me once that he wasn't going to eat any dessert I made for him ever again. LOL!

Characters: I like how doggedly determined Beatrice is to help her friend. Her other friends are kinda ditsy though.

Plot: Beatrice goes all out for her date and is quite peeved when he stands her up. With her friends in tow, she is off to give him a piece of her mind. Unfortunately, she never gets the chance. It seems that somebody else had a problem with her wayward date. She is off to solve the mystery.

Overall: The characters are ok. The book is perfect for when you want a quick little cozy mystery. Will I read more of the series? I probably won't go out of my way to grab one but if it fits a Goodreads challenge, I know I can't go wrong with something by this author.

Review: Gertie's Paranormal Plantation

Gertie's Paranormal Plantation Gertie's Paranormal Plantation by Melanie James
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Synopsis:

A Laugh Till It Hurts Literal Leigh Romance Diaries Spin-off
Everyone’s favorite witch, Gertie O’Leary, is back! And she has a story of her own to tell.
“One thing I’ve learned about running a shelter for paranormal creatures, you can’t afford to let your guard down. It all started when I welcomed an enchanting new guest to my plantation. Strange things started to happen. Well, more strange than usual. I was caught off guard by some conflicting feelings and it spurred me on to get Brad, the love of my life, committed. To moving in with me, that is. In any case, I was willing to do whatever it took: love spells, black magic, and something so naughty I’d rather not mention it here. Nothing worked out quite the way I planned and I ended up having to go to hell and back just to save my own self! If it wasn’t for Marie Laveau and the rest of my friends, I wouldn’t be able to share this tale with you in my memoir, Gertie’s Paranormal Plantation.”

My Thoughts:

Cover/Title: The cover & title are as fun as the book itself. Paranormal doesn't even begin to explain her plantation.

Characters: This is an interesting bunch of characters. They are funny, lovable and downright crazy but it works.

Plot: Gertie wants to move her relationship with her boyfriend, Brad, forward. She is tired of the long distance relationship. She decides to help the relationship out with a tiny little spell. Sometimes, the best of intentions can lead us down a different path than we expect.

Overall: I enjoyed this fun story. If you are looking for a fun and easy read, then this will definitely do the trick. I will probably read more of this series at some point.
